Bureau of Land Management plans prescribed fire on Eleven Mile Flat

ELKO, Nev. – A prescribed fire is planned for multiple days between April 21, 2025 through May 9, 2025, on public land approximately 26 miles north of Battle Mountain, Nevada.

This prescribed fire is designed to reduce the accumulation of tumbleweed along existing fence lines. The project goals are to increase wildlife movement, decrease the risk of a damaging wildland fire, and improve wildlife habitat.

 

BLM updates Vegetation Management for Northeast Nevada

ELKO, Nev. – The Bureau of Land Management today issued updates for how the agency will manage weeds and support wildlife restoration and rehabilitation work on public lands effected. The updates affect wildland fire in Elko County and the northern portions of Eureka and Lander counties and incorporate comments and suggestions from the public and other resource management agencies.

The updates promote the latest innovations in rangeland research and ecology, include new site stabilization and seeding technologies, and update what herbicides can be used to treat invasive annual grasses and noxious weeds on public lands. Elko District plans prescribed fire on Spruce Mountain

ELKO, Nev. – Weather conditions permitting, the Elko District is planning a 51-acre prescribed fire on public land on the western portion of Spruce Mountain. The objective is to reduce hand-piled debris from thinning operations designed to improve wildlife habitat and remove hazardous fuels.

The project is located approximately 36 miles south of Wells, NV, and three miles east of Highway 93. Burning operations are scheduled for multiple days between January 15 and April 7, 2025, when burning conditions are appropriate.

 

Cultivating the next generation of wildland firefighters at a Reno high school

Bureau of Land Management (BLM) wildland firefighters are kicking off the second year of the Fire Science Career and Technical Education (CTE) program at the Academy of Arts, Careers & Technology (AACT) high school in Reno.

The first high-school level program of its kind in the Washoe County School District, CTE pairs curriculum-based classroom lessons with hands-on, skills-based training, preparing students with foundational knowledge and practical skills essential for careers in wildland firefighting.
